There are many great ways to prevent pregnancy until you are ready. We want the best for you and therefore we offer a variety of choices, each with its own specific benefits. When you come in for your appointment we can discuss all of these options in detail.

So many choices? How do I choose?

Well the first step is learning about the different options:

✓ Birth Control Pills

This is the classic method that has been used for many years. Basically, you take 1 pill every day and this prevents you from ovulating. No ovulation = no pregnancy. Of course, the problem with this method is you must take a pill every single day. Missed pills greatly increase your chance of becoming pregnant.

✓ The NuvaRing

This method works in the body chemically the same exact way birth control pills do. However, you do not have to take a pill every day. The NuvaRing is a soft flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina on the first Sunday after your period. It is left in place for 3 weeks and then removed. The 4th week or your “off week”,

you do not have the ring inserted and you will have your period this week. The following Sunday you start the cycle again. This method is great in the sense that you do not have to remember to take a pill every day. It is not felt at all once inserted, you can have sex with the ring inserted without any discomfort to you or your partner. While this method may sound a little “strange”, we find that once our patients try this they usually fall in love with it.

✓ Nexplanon implant

Nexplanon contains etonogestrel 68mg, it is a small, thin and flexible arm implant that provides up to 3 years of continuous birth control. We at HealthCare now have been trained directly by Merck (the makers of Nexplanon) to insert and remove this device. The insertion process is very simple. During your appointment, a small section of your upper arm is numbed with a medication called Lidocaine. Once the small area of skin is completely
asleep, we use a special insertion device to quickly and painlessly insert the device. The whole process usually takes less than 2 minutes. After the 3 years, it can either be removed or replaced to provide an additional 3 years
of birth control if desired. Also, it can be removed early at any time during the 3 years if pregnancy is desired.

✓ The IUD

The IUD is a small flexible T shaped device, about the size of a quarter. The IUD is placed in the uterus during a short 5-minute office procedure. Once in place, the device prevents pregnancy by preventing implantation in the uterus. You will not feel your IUD once it is in place and you can have normal sexual intercourse as usual. This is a highly effective form of birth control that you don’t have to think of every day as the IUD (depending on which one is chosen) will work from 3-10 years. As soon as one desires pregnancy, it can easily be removed at our office.

✓ Paragard:

This is a copper IUD that has no hormones, Lasts for 10 years.

✓ Mirena

• Progesterone containing IUD
• Usually reserved for women who have previously given birth
• Lasts for 5 years
• Can also be used to treat uterine bleeding as this IUD usually will prevent you from having a period all together while in place.

✓ Skyla (Mirena’s little sister)

• Progesterone contining IUD
• Used for women who have not had vaginal birth
• Lasts for 3 years

kyleena

✓ Kyleema (the new kid on the block)

You get best of both worlds, can be used if you have never given birth AND
Lasts up to 5 years. This is the preferred IUD at HealthCare Now given its small size, ease of insertion and5-year duration of use.
There are several differences between these and there may be one that is more appropriate for your case. We will go over this with you during your appointment.
